Autumn Trip to Athens

Get to Know this Symbol of Ancient Civilisation, Art and Culture

With its history stretching back over 3 400 years, Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world, but also a modern, bustling metropolis that will keep you engaged for days.

Get to know the city named after the Greek goddess of wisdom. Autumn is the ideal time for this, as the Mediterranean sun is more pleasant, there are fewer tourists, rains are rare, and Athens is bathed in autumn colours that completely transform the look of this metropolis.

An Air Serbia flight takes you to the airport in Athens in just over one hour, and then the real adventure begins. Visit the Acropolis, the museums and historic sights, but make sure not to miss the cuisine, walks, cafés and night-life of the Greek capital.

The Sights of Athens

Start your visit to Athens from the place this city is known for worldwide. The Acropolis is a symbol of ancient Greece, the birthplace of democracy, a place that instils awe and generously offers lessons in history. Its name means tall city or city on the hill and it provides a magnificent view of the entire city.

The Parthenon was built in the fifth century b.c.e. as the treasury guarding precious offerings to the goddess Athena. Throughout its long history it was a Christian church, then a mosque, and it is also known as the oldest example of the golden mean in architecture, and the ultimate temple of ancient Greece.

The Theatre of Dionysus is an imposing ancient open-air theatre that could host 17 000 visitors in its time. It represents the foundation of theatre as the art we know today.

Made of white marble, the Panathinaikos Stadium dates back to the 4th century b.c.e. It was reconstructed in the 19th century for the first modern Olympic games.

The Ancient Agora is an archaeological site near the Acropolis that was an ancient marketplace and site of gatherings, trade and political activity. Make sure to visit the well-preserved site and note its similarities and differences to the modern political scene.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus also stands out among temples with its beauty. Its construction lasted for 700 years, and it was built with the aim of honouring the highest deity. It was one of the largest ancient temples in the world. Its remains are magnificent - although only 16 columns remain of the original 104, they doubtless bear witness to the grandeur of this temple.

A visit to the Acropolis is an experience akin to time travel to ancient times. It can be crowned with a visit to the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. You will be delighted by the rich collection of artefacts from ancient times. We also recommend a visit to the museum library, and interesting lectures in the museum. This visit truly expands one's horizons.

At the very centre of Athens is the main gathering place - Syntagma Square with the famous Parliament building. In front of it, every hour, guards dressed in traditional Greek costumes change shifts. Make sure to photograph the guards, but do not expect their attention - they are so engrossed in their activity that not even the biggest crowds, usual for this spot, can distract them.

Plaka the famous quarter of gods located under the Acropolis, is the oldest neighbourhood in Athens and the heart of today's Greek capital. With its authentic souvenir shops, cafés and tavernas, Plaka has an irresistible charm that often makes tourists change their ambitious plans and spend all day here.

Shopping in Athens

Visitors love Greece precisely because of the shopping along the closed streets that remind one of wide boulevards and markets. Greeks are known as skilful merchants that enjoy haggling and making deals with curious shoppers. It is nearly certain that you will perfect your negotiation skills here, so give in to the experience and learn from the best.

The areas of Plaka and Monastiraki are places where you can buy the most varied products at favourable prices. You will find modern shopping centres in Ermou street, and jewellery in the Kolonaki neighbourhood.

Gastronomy

Once you get to know traditional Greek cuisine, you will realise Greeks live for their gastronomy.

Greek cuisine is one of the oldest and most recognisable in the world. Whether you want to have a snack, such as refreshing salads (talaganisalata, melitzanosalata) or you seek something more substantial (souvlaki, gyros, moussaka, fish specialties), you will enjoy the unique culinary experience.

Make sure to bring back local spices and sauces from this trip so that once you are home you will always be able to evoke memories of the authentic scents and flavours of Greek cuisine.

Psiri

Greece is also known for its specific music. Find out how they dance, party and celebrate in Athens. For the best possible nightlife we recommend Psiri - a neighbourhood of cute cafés and clubs where you can enjoy mezze and Greek music.
