The National Museum of Serbia
From its establishment in 1844 under the name Muzeum Serbski, until its final location in the building of the former Fund Administration in 1952, the National Museum of Serbia, the central and senior museum institution of Serbia, vividly testifies to the rich, diverse and multicultural heritage of Serbia, the Balkans and Europe. The architecturally impressive building on Republic Square is an important centre of the historical and cultural life of Serbia.
The permanent exhibition of the National Museum of Serbia is displayed on three levels covering 5,000 m². Every day its treasures tell stories about people, the traces of their creativity and phenomena from prehistoric times until the modern age. The collections of the National Museum of Serbia today number over 400,000 items discovered, excavated, bought, donated and carefully preserved during the many years of the life of this institution. Starting from archaeological artefacts discovered throughout the Balkans, through the rich medieval heritage and works of art by both local and European artists, the permanent exhibition lets us travel great distances and bridge centuries in just a few hours.
The National Museum of Serbia is an open and active meeting place of different cultures, eras and artistic movements, whose daily activity invites and involves us in new revelations.
